Stuart Charman’s Front-Seat Insights into NADA 2026

Returning from the NADA 2026 Show in the United States is always a whirlwind of new tech and big promises. As I reflected on the long flight back to Australia, one thing became crystal clear: while the “shiny new things” grab the headlines, the real winners in our industry will be those who bridge the gap between AI potential and DMS reality. At Pentana Solutions, we have always been committed to taking our customers where they need to be. My time at NADA 2026 solidified that our roadmap isn’t just on track, it’s ahead of the curve. However, it also highlighted exactly where we need to press the accelerator.

Here are my four key pillars for the future of automotive innovation following the conference:

1. AI: Moving from “Chat-bots” to “Substance”

The “AI push” continues unabated, but we have reached a point of saturation where many vendors look remarkably similar. The real shift I observed this year was the move from simple text-based chat to sophisticated Voice inbound and outbound agents.

The goal isn’t just to have an AI that talks; it’s to have an AI that is fully integrated into the DMS’ handling Chat, SMS, WhatsApp, and Voice seamlessly. At Pentana, we are ramping up our AI development to ensure these tools aren’t just “add-ons,” but core components of your workflow within the dealership and the DMS alike.

2. The Customer Experience is Visual

One area that stood out wasn’t a complex backend algorithm, but a simple front-end evolution: Photographic AI. Dealers are still struggling to make standard vehicle photos look professional. New AI software can now take a basic photo sequence and transform it into an exceptional, studio-quality visual experience. This is a “quick win” for professional branding that we are currently investigating.

3. Data Sovereignty and security

Spending time with other DMS providers was enlightening. Their transition from older Tech to new Tech mirrors many of the journeys we take with our own customers. They spoke about taking the time to get the next tech right to build a robust data integration hub. It reinforced my conviction in our ‘PowerVault’ strategy. While there is often initial resistance to new data structures, the end goal is giving dealers true, secure access to their own data is non-negotiable. We will continue to push forward with our data solutions with absolute conviction.

4. Mobility as a Service

As we look at global trends (including my recent work with our customers in Italy), the management of Loan cars is becoming an area of the business that needs to be streamlined and improved. Seeing some providers of Loan Car Mobility suites in action confirmed that this is an area of need for the Australian market. Streamlining the “mobility” aspect of the dealership is no longer a luxury; it’s a requirement for modern customer service.

Looking Ahead: The Australian dealers I travelled with were incredibly encouraging. They see our commitment to the industry and are ready for us to keep communicating, keep hitting our timings, and keep collaborating through programs like the Pentana Solutions Customer Voice.

My priority now? Ramping up our AI team alongside our business to ensure we deliver these integrated products to our customer base. The NADA 2026 trip was a powerful reminder: we don’t just follow trends; we build the tools that make those trends work for our customer’s bottom line.
