With the weather getting warmer throughout Australia, car manufacturers are still seeing an increase in sales. The VFACTS National Report shows new vehicle sales continue to increase, as predicted.

The industry is still on track for another outstanding year of new vehicle sales. This year to date the Australian Motor Industry has sold a total of 862,832 vehicles compared to 832,948 this time in 2014. Australian sales have risen by 6.8% in the month of September compared with the month of September, 2014.

State versus State

Without surprise, New South Wales once again lead the month selling 33,983 new cars, an increase of 11.9% from August. The big improver from the previous results is Tasmania who had a 20.5% increase selling 2,090 new vehicles. This is an additional 486 vehicles more than the ACT (1,604 vehicles) and 1,305 more than NT who sold 785 vehicles. Comparing these results to this same time last year shows consistent year to year growth for NSW, QLD and VIC, however we will let you draw your own conclusion as to why NT, SA and WA experienced small decreases.

Petrol vehicles continue to drive past diesel buyers

Private buyers of new passenger vehicles are continuing to shy away from diesel engines with a decrease of 24.4% compared to the previous year. Is this the end of the trend? Or is the dropping price of petrol allowing consumers a fair comparison in fuel types? Surprisingly, LPG had a significant bounce back after a poor August increasing in sales by a whopping 30%. Who knows what is in store for October sales with all the events surrounding the industry.

Brand Breakdown

Toyota continues to lead the way as the number one selling brand for September, selling nearly 17,000 new vehicles with Mazda its nearest rival selling 11,000 new vehicles. The competition to be the highest selling brand heats up down the ladder with Holden (9,326), Hyundai (9,311) and Mitsubishi (6,937) rounding out the top five selling brands for September.

Top 10 Selling Makes

With an increase of 76.8% sales from August you will be seeing a lot more of the Hyundai i30 on the road in the future as it overtakes the Toyota Corolla as the top selling small car of the month.
